What Is a Pit Kiln?
A Pit Kiln is one of the earliest crafting structures in Vintage Story. It allows players to turn raw clay items into finished pottery used for cooking, storage, farming, and progression.
Required Materials
- 1–4 unfired clay items;
- 10 Dry Grass;
- 8 Sticks;
- 4–8 Fuel pieces;
- A Torch or Firestarter.
How to Build a Pit Kiln
- Dig a one-block-deep pit.
- Place your clay items inside.
- Add 10 pieces of Dry Grass.
- Add 8 Sticks.
- Cover the kiln with fuel.
- Ignite it using a Torch or Firestarter.
Once the firing process is complete, the pottery will be ready to use.
Firing Time by Fuel Type
| Fuel | Time |
|---|---|
| Firewood | 40 minutes |
| Peat | 32 minutes |
| Brown coal | 28 minutes |
| Black coal | 24 minutes |
| Charcoal | 20 minutes |
| Coke | 20 minutes |
Safety Tips
Pit Kilns are one of the few real fire hazards in Vintage Story. Embers can ignite nearby flammable blocks up to two blocks away horizontally and three blocks vertically.

- Build away from wooden structures.
- Clear grass and bushes around the kiln.
- Use a non-flammable roof.
- Keep a water source nearby.
Pro Tips
Always try to fill a Pit Kiln with four items whenever possible. Fuel consumption and firing time remain the same, making it much more efficient. For larger production chains, consider running multiple kilns simultaneously.
