Why this mod is worth installing
This mod suits players who find the default map too powerful but still want a gradual path back to navigation aids. It is especially useful for survival runs focused on landmarks, manual orientation, and meaningful equipment upgrades.
What Craftable Cartography adds
Craftable Cartography initially disables player tracking on the map, player markers, automatic centering, and movement tracking. A basic craftable map still opens the map when kept in the hotbar, but you must interpret the terrain and manage your position yourself; the .recentremap command can recenter it when necessary.
The mod adds a progression of navigation tools. A compass reveals your heading after its needle settles and supports zooming, while a sextant takes several seconds to determine your coordinates. Temporal versions upgrade these tools and can restore the direction or coordinate HUD, including a degree-based heading display.
At the top of the progression is the JPS, which restores the missing HUD elements, minimap, and map position display. It can also show other players when they use JPS devices tuned to the same channel. Prospecting marks require manual coordinate entry unless you carry a JPS, and only one unrecorded reading is retained.
