Farseer

Farseer

Farseer is a Vintage Story mod by badgerson. Farseer extends the visible terrain silhouette far beyond the normal view distance, rendering distant landforms as atmospheric heightmap fog.

Why this mod is worth installing

This mod suits players who want to see mountains, valleys, and other distant landforms while exploring. It is especially useful on servers where a shared far-terrain view adds orientation without rendering full distant chunks.

What Farseer adds

Farseer builds two-dimensional heightmaps from world terrain and displays them as a fog-like silhouette beyond the normal view range. By default, the effect can reach roughly 4,000 blocks in every direction, making large landforms visible before you approach them.

The distant image is deliberately simple: it does not contain trees, buildings, or other detailed objects. Heightmaps are generated for unexplored surroundings when needed, while the temporary chunk data used for sampling is not saved to the world.

A client settings panel opens with Control + Shift + F and lets you adjust the far view distance and visual behavior. The server controls generation limits, stores heightmaps in its Farseer database, and can share the prepared distant terrain with connecting players.

The mod can reduce the need to render complete distant chunks, but the first generation pass may put extra pressure on world generation. The far silhouettes are static, so later changes to terrain or structures are not reflected automatically.
