Salty´s Firestarters

Salty´s Firestarters is a Vintage Story mod by SaltyWater. Salty’s Firestarters adds environment-based fire lighting with quartz, bow drill, spyglass, flint and steel, torches, and tougher vanilla rules.

Why this mod is worth installing

This utility mod suits players who want fire-making to depend on sunlight, warmth, rain, clouds, and wind instead of working anywhere at any time.

What Salty´s Firestarters adds

The mod keeps the vanilla inventory and interface while adding several ways to ignite fires. Early survival can use a crude bow with a firestarter, while clear quartz works as a slow sunlight-powered magnifier when the sky, time, temperature, and weather cooperate.

Later, a spyglass-based method makes fire-starting quicker but wears down the firestarter. Flint and a steel ingot provide a faster late-game option, with more forgiving temperature and daylight requirements. Each method can ignite grass, other combustible materials, and block entities such as firepits or forges.

Vanilla torches and firestarters also receive environmental rules. Wind can prevent outdoor ignition, rain and cloud cover can interfere with sunlight, cold limits several tools, and torches may go out in the player’s hand or when stored in a backpack. Tool-specific settings allow many of these checks and break chances to be adjusted.

Bow drill and quartz in the early game

Bow drill and quartz in the early game

A crude bow with a firestarter enables early fire-making, while clear quartz focuses sunlight onto one spot. The method is slow and checks sky access, time, temperature, rain, clouds, and wind.

Spyglass fire-starting method

Spyglass fire-starting method

The spyglass-based setup creates fire more efficiently than the early method, consuming one point of firestarter durability with each use.

Flint and steel for late-game fires

Flint and steel for late-game fires

Flint in the main hand and a steel ingot in the off-hand provide a faster ignition method that tolerates lower temperatures and a wider daylight period.

Environmental rules for torches

Environmental rules for torches

A torch offers a quick way to start a fire, but it still depends on selected environmental checks. Flint can also have a configurable chance to break.

Vanilla firestarter requirements

Vanilla firestarter requirements

The standard firestarter uses two sticks and dry grass. Outdoor wind can extinguish a torch in hand, and torches may automatically go out in a backpack when that option is enabled.

Sky access requirement

Direct sunlight is required for this check, so fire cannot be started inside a house or cave. The sky-access rule is fixed and cannot be configured.

Sun position and usable hours

The sun must be high enough for sunlight-based methods: the default windows are 9:00–15:00 for clear quartz and 8:00–16:00 for the spyglass method. These hours are customizable.

Temperature limits

The surrounding temperature must be warm enough for the selected tool. Default thresholds range from 5°C to 10°C, depending on the method, and can be changed.

Rain affects outdoor fire-making

Rain can prevent outdoor ignition. This environmental check applies outside and may be disabled in the settings.

Cloud density and sunlight

Heavy cloud cover can block the sunlight needed by relevant fire-starting methods. The cloud-density check can be turned off.

Wind and fire-starting

Stormy wind can stop outdoor fire-making. Wind checks are optional, and separate tool settings are stored in the Firestarter configuration files.
