Footprints is a Vintage Story mod by Aylor and Lalijara. Footprints adds fading tracks for players and animals on soft ground, with controls for textures, visibility, creatures, and performance.

Why this mod is worth installing
This mod suits players who want animal tracking and a more tangible connection between movement and terrain. It is also useful for servers that need control over whose footprints appear and how many are retained.
What Footprints adds
Animals and players leave visible tracks while moving across suitable soft materials such as soil, gravel, sand, clay, peat, and snow. Footprints do not appear on every block, which keeps the effect tied to terrain where marks would make sense.
Tracks gradually become more transparent and disappear after roughly six in-game hours. You can adjust footprint textures and sizes by entity type, choose higher- or lower-resolution visuals, and customize the player footprint.
The mod includes filters for materials and animals, optional handling for rust- or lore-related creatures, and an option to show tracks only while crouching. Tamed animals are excluded by default, while server settings can govern the effect for everyone.
Clients may locally disable the visual effect when permitted by the server. Limits on stored and visible prints help prevent large groups of animals from creating excessive performance costs.
Spoiler! Footprint stress test
A large group of animals demonstrates how many footprints can appear at once. The scene illustrates the visual load produced by hundreds of animals using the default settings.
