Forager's Gamble is a Vintage Story mod by Chronolegionaire. Forager's Gamble hides food names, nutrition, and safety until you investigate them, while delayed toxins make wild foraging a risky survival choice.
Why this mod is worth installing
This mod suits players who want foraging to require observation, cautious tasting, and remembered knowledge instead of revealing every food property immediately.
What Forager's Gamble adds
Unknown foods conceal their name, nutrition values, and health effects until you have eaten that food type. Plants producing unfamiliar food are masked as well, so identifying a useful plant becomes part of exploration.
Sneaking while eating lets you nibble an unknown item. The entire item is consumed, but the effect is reduced to a small fraction, giving you a safer way to test questionable finds. Meals remain unidentified in terms of safety by default, even when their ingredients are known.
Toxic foods reveal their name and nutrition after being eaten, but their danger stays hidden until the poison actually harms you. Toxins can take hours to appear, and accumulating too much unprocessed poison can be fatal.
The optional poison shuffle can move damage values between items in the same category. A Forager's Journal also lets you record discovered knowledge with an ink and quill, preserve it after death, or pass it to another player.
