Thrifty Smithing is a Vintage Story mod by Foxcapades. Thrifty Smithing returns usable metal bits from material trimmed away during anvil crafting, reducing waste from smithing recipes.
Why this mod is worth installing
This mod suits players who want metalworking to consume fewer resources without removing the material cost of recipes. It is also useful in modded setups where smithing recipes need controlled scrap recovery.
What Thrifty Smithing adds
When an anvil recipe is finished, Thrifty Smithing compares the material placed on the anvil with the amount consumed by the recipe. The removed voxels are converted into whole metal bits and awarded to the player who completes the work.
The same recovery works with automated helve-hammer smithing. Since no player receives the result directly, the recovered bits appear on the ground at the base of the anvil.
The calculation can account for ingots, metal plates, and individual material units. A recovery multiplier lets a server or modpack reduce the returned amount, while selected recipe assets can be excluded from scrap rewards entirely.
The mod also exposes work-item attributes that other mods can use to add or subtract voxels, ingots, or plates before the scrap total is calculated. This allows custom smithing systems to adjust the result without replacing the whole recovery mechanic.
