Toolsmith is a Vintage Story mod by JonR. Toolsmith makes tools modular: handles, bindings, sharpness and maintenance affect durability, letting well-cared-for equipment last much longer.

Why this mod is worth installing
Choose it if vanilla tools feel too disposable and you want maintenance, material choices and realistic wear to matter. It is especially useful for players who prefer repairing and preserving equipment over constant recrafting.
What Toolsmith adds
Toolsmith treats many tools as assemblies with separate heads, handles and bindings. Better wooden grips can be carved from hardwood, while professional handles require extra abrasive work; bindings keep the head attached and stronger materials last longer.
Handles can be protected with treatments such as fat or beeswax, adding a practical reason to prepare and maintain wooden parts. The system also distinguishes tinkered tools from smithed tools, so different crafting patterns can use different wear behavior.
Non-blunt tools have a sharpness bar alongside durability. As sharpness falls, efficiency drops and the chance of damaging the head rises, encouraging sharpening on a grindstone or whetstone before continued use becomes costly.

Grips
The image presents carved hardwood handles and more advanced professional handles, showing how extra processing can improve a tool’s grip and longevity.

Wood Treatments
The image shows protective treatments for wooden handles, including fat and beeswax, which help shield the wood and improve its durability.

Bindings
The image explains bindings that secure a tool head to its handle. Stronger binding materials last longer and can reduce the force transferred to the handle.
